What is the size of your congregation?
Approximately 425 members.

Where is Starmount Presbyterian Church located?
SPC is at 3501 West Market Street. The church doors are accessed by coming in from the parking lot once you take the Market Street driveway. Look for large glass doors. On Sunday mornings, there are people standing outside to greet you and help you find anything you might need such as nurseries or a fresh cup of coffee.

How would you describe the worship services? Are they traditional, contemporary, or somewhere in between?
Our worship services are great times of celebration in which we seek to uplift and magnify the name of our God and at the same time, be inspired and encouraged to live for Him. Pastor John Odom preaches a relevant message from God’s Word and frequently follows the Lectionary Readings. You may like to listen to one of his recent sermons. The services are a blend and many musical selections are from the great collections of Christian music, but often many contemporary pieces are used to enhance the worship experience as well.

Describe the Presbyterian Church that Starmount is part of.
SPC is part of the Presbyterian Church USA. Presbyterians are distinctive in two major ways: they adhere to a pattern of religious thought known as reformed theology and a form of government that stresses the active, representational leadership of both ministers and church members. The local church governing body of which SPC is a part is Salem Presbytery.

The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), with denominational offices in Louisville, Kentucky, has approximately 2.3 million members, more than 10,000 congregations, and 14,000 ordained and active ministers.

Is childcare provided during worship?
Yes! And for almost every activity and program that little children would not enjoy, there is childcare. We have large rooms with plenty of toys and things to interest children. We also provide parents with a paging device in case we need to let you know your child may be unhappy or not feeling well.

I have teenage children. Is there anything offered for that age group?
A resounding yes! Starmount has been known for many years for its strong youth program. We have outstanding leaders and the church is committed to providing experiences for the youth that will help them make good choices as they reach adulthood. The youth participate in mission trips, take summer mountain retreats, and are generally very active throughout the year.

How should I dress for worship services at Starmount?
Some of our members wear shorts and sandals, and others feel comfortable in coats and ties. Many women wear pants or casual attire, and some wear suits. Most clothing is pretty casual, but everyone feels comfortable in wearing whatever they enjoy.

What is required for membership at Starmount?
At SPC, there is no pressure to join. People make that commitment after they have developed relationships in the church and express their desire to become a part of the church family. Once you feel and express that need, there are three ways to become a member:

  1. If you have never made a public declaration of faith in Jesus Christ, you may do so at our church and receive the sacrament of baptism in order to become a member of the church.
  2. If you have a membership in another church, you may join Starmount Presbyterian Church by transferring your membership from that church to ours. The former church is simply notified that you wish to have your membership transferred, and appropriate forms are sent from one church to the other. Transfer of membership is done between Presbyterian churches and some others also.
  3. You may join the church by reaffirmation of faith; this means simply that you previously made a declaration of faith in Jesus Christ in another church and were baptized, but now are unable to present evidence of that action. Reasons for this may be that the previous church no longer exists, does not participate in the membership transfer process, or no longer has a record of your membership.

When are church offices open?
Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Do you have a preschool program?

Yes! Starmount’s Preschool Program has been a vibrant part of the Greensboro community for many years. You do not have to be a member of Starmount for your children to participate in the preschool program. As you can see, there are many special days planned including this visit from a llama!

What programs does your church offer?
It is our desire to offer a well-rounded Christian program for the entire family. We offer many programs that are designed to help people know Christ and grow in faith. During worship, there is a program for children who stay in church until after the children’s message. Sunday School is for all age groups at 9 a.m. There are many other programs and opportunities for Christian fellowship including dinners, small group meetings, fellowship, Starmount Friends, missions, and Presbyterian Women.

I have heard that Starmount is going to be remodeled? Is that happening soon?
Very soon! Changes to modernize and improve the sanctuary and area leading into the main building may begin as early as this summer! This is an exciting time!
