For the past 20 years, Starmount has been a sponsoring church for the Shepherd’s Center of Greensboro (SCG), an organization of older adults helping older adults pursue independent and active lives of quality, enriched and supported by learning and service activities in caring fellowship.”

Among the services and programs of SCG in which many Starmount volunteers are actively involved are: Adventures in Learning, classes on a variety of subjects offered 3 times yearly for six weeks, with an average attendance of 300; SeniorNet Learning Center, month-long classes in basic and advanced computer skills, in which some 75 volunteers have assisted over 3,000 students; Shepherd’s Wheels, medical transportation provided by volunteers to over 130 individuals; Shepherd’s Travelers, offering day trips of interest to a variety of attractions in North Carolina and neighboring states at minimal expense; Tax Counselors, a program in partnership with the IRS in which 7 tax counselors provide free income tax assistance in completion of simple tax forms; CarePartners, in which trained volunteers, in partnership with the Adult Center for Enrichment, provide three hours of respite for caregivers; and Home Handyman, which offers volunteer assistance and in-home instruction for operation of VCRs and DVD players along with minor home repairs.
