Habitat for Humanity - Greater Greensboro
Habitat for Humanity of Greater Greensboro, an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI), seeks to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from the world and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action.
Founded in 1976 by Millard & Linda Fuller, HFHI is a non-profit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry, which has built more than 225,000 houses around the world, providing more than 1 million people in more than 3,000 communities with safe, decent, affordable shelter. Our local Greensboro affiliate, which was chartered in 1987, is one of 86 affiliates in North Carolina. It has built over 300 homes.
Starmount has been actively involved in the work of Habitat since its crew was first organized in 1989. Led by Brownie Owens, the Starmount crew regularly undertakes work such as installing windows and exterior doors, doing blocking in kitchens and bathrooms, among other jobs. Specific skills are not required of our crew members, who are provided with the necessary training. All that is needed of our volunteers is enthusiasm to help a sister or brother to get a safe, decent home.
Starmount is also a member of the Presbyterian Partnership founded in 1990, which has built 15 Habitat houses, including this year’s (2007). The allocation that the Starmount mission committee designates for Habitat for Humanity of Greater Greensboro goes to the Presbyterian Partnership house. The current cost to build a house is estimated at $60,000. For more information, please visit: Habitat Greensboro and Habitat for Humanity International
