Greensboro Urban Ministry
Founded in 1967, Greensboro Urban Ministry (GUM) is an ecumenical outreach agency supported by more than 200 congregations representing Protestant, Catholic, and Jewish faith traditions.
Not only does Urban Ministry provide crisis intervention and emergency services through the basics of food, shelter, and clothing, but they also help many individuals and families break the cycles of poverty, hunger, addiction, and homelessness.GUM is Starmount’s single largest recipient of local mission money. We are also involved in a more direct way with the following GUM projects: GUM Food Drive and Annual Feast of Caring.
GUM Food Drive
Starmount Presbyterian Church is a long-time supporter of Greensboro Urban Ministry (GUM) and the many agencies connected with GUM. Throughout 2007, we collected and donated over 1000 pounds of food to the Food Bank.
Annual Feast of Caring
One of the most exciting events of Greensboro Urban Ministry is the Feast of Caring, which invites the community to come together to kick off GUM’s annual fundraising campaign. The event is noted for the beautiful pottery donated by local potters in Greensboro and surrounding communities.
This event also marks the introduction of the new Honor Card for the holiday season, based on original artwork by local artist William Mangum. All participants are treated to freshly prepared soup and homemade bread.
Attendees who make a minimum $20 pledge/donation to Greensboro Urban Ministry receive their choice of a pottery bowl or four Honor Cards.
The humble meal of soup and bread is a reminder to those of us who are more fortunate that there are many in our community who are grateful for a simple bowl of soup and bread.
Members of Starmount participate by attending the event and/or by providing one or more loaves of homemade bread.
