Good News Jail and Prison Ministry
Good News Jail and Prison Ministry began in 1961 in northern Virginia and soon spread across the United States and other countries. Today there are over 103 chaplains in the U.S. and over 301 chaplains in 22 other countries. In 1981, Good News Mission began a ministry at Guilford Correctional Center, with Robert Scruggs as chaplain. Now 60 churches are involved in the ministry at the prison on a regular basis.
Starmount Church helps the Prison Ministry in several ways: We provide funds through our benevolence giving; twice a year we provide a devotion for the men at the prison, followed by refreshments; we support and attend the annual fund-raising dinner; we provide treats at Halloween for the men, and candy-filled Easter eggs for their children at Easter. We've also helped at the children's Christmas party. From time to time, some of our members also help spruce up the prison gardens.
