Black Child Development Institute
The Black Child Development Institute of Greensboro, Inc. is one of 33
affiliates of the National Black Child Development Institute. The national organization has four main program goals: child health, child welfare, education and public policy advocacy. In Greensboro, the Institute responds to the needs of children by providing direct service programs, activities and events which enhance and improve the quality of life of children and families. To accomplish these goals, the Institute utilizes a cadre of volunteers to provide direct service programs, community forums and workshops for children, youth and families. Thousands of volunteers have been matched with elementary, middle and high school students to improve academic performance, bolster self esteem and revitalize the spirit of volunteerism in the African-American community. Volunteers also serve as advocates for monitoring legislation and public policy pertaining to children and youth.
Starmount provides monetary support to Black Child Development through its annual mission budget. In addition, each August the mission committee coordinates a church-wide collection of school supplies needed by area students for the new school year. Because of a special need for calculators required for high school advanced math classes, this year the committee also allocated additional funds in order to provide 11 calculators to the Institute for distribution to needy students.
